Few people appreciate it when the roof doesn’t leak. Everyone notices when it does.

Preventing construction problems isn’t a glamorous business. Sometimes it even seems odd to have quality and construction in the same sentence. To make a profit in the construction business, builders have to work as quickly and cheaply as possible; quality control can sound like more of a hindrance than a help.

In my 30 years of construction experience, I have come to realize that it is possible to build quality, make money, and satisfy the customer. I have learned this working as a carpenter, contractor, superintendent, project manager, general superintendent, quality control manager, quality consultant, and technical writer.

Like the other contributors to this website, I am an entrepreneur. My primary business is helping contractors build according to design. Big builders and small builders take high risks every day—risks that errors can be made that cost the builders and the property owner a lot of money. My job is to help make sure that doesn’t happen.

Homebuilders, subcontractors and homeowners all benefit from the prevention of problems. I strongly believe that problem prevention creates profits. This website is one way that I can communicate that.

If you are having a house built, educate yourself on what to look for as your house is being built. Don’t assume the building inspector or the builder is infallible. You can prevent a lot of problems yourself.

My advice to contractors: never assume that the way you or your people are doing business is the best way. Always strive for organizational and product excellence by continually improving the way you do business.
