taper thread

A screw thread cut at a slight angle that is narrower at the cut end of a pipe with male threads. See the illustration and link below.
Taper thread is used in piping systems to join pipe and fittings in a manner that ensures a tight seal. Taper thread pipe joined to a taper thread fitting makes a tighter seal the more it is tightened.
NPT, National Pipe Thread Taper (also known as ANSI/ASME B1.20.1 Pipe Threads, General Purpose) are approved for residential gas piping. NPT threads are tapered 1/16th inch in an inch, which is an angle of one degree, 47 minutes.
