A short concrete or masonry wall built on top of a footing.
Stem wall foundations are often used for the perimeter foundation of a building with a crawlspace. The floor framing is supported by the stem wall creating a crawlspace below.
Concrete floor slabs may also be placed on top of stem walls with compacted earth on the interior to support the slab.
A stem wall foundation can have relatively deep footings and would be a benefit in areas subject to storm surge or high wind to help anchor the building to the ground.
