Span rating

An index number that designates the maximum recommended center-to-center spacing for supports, in inches. The trademark stamped on the face of sheathing and siding panels shows the span rating. Larger numbers indicate stiffer and stronger panels. The span rating may be shown as a single number; i.e. “24” or a fractional number; i.e. “48/24.” Panels with a given span rating may be manufactured in different thicknesses depending on the composition and orientation of the plies (for plywood) or strands (for oriented strand board.)
