1. A method of dimensioning the spacing of framing or finish members by the distance from the centerline of one member to the centerline of the next. Studs, joists, rafters girders, railing spindles and other members are primarily spaced "on center". Also called "On Center". 2. In plumbing, the dimension from the center of one pipe or fitting opening to another. One method used to measure and fit piping.
