Excess Concrete Bleed Water with Superplasticiser
Excessive bleeding water was observed in paved concrete after compaction and initial floating was over, approximately one hour after initial placement. The ambient temperature was 5-8 degrees celcius, air content 2.5-3.0 percent, and used superplasticizer blended with AEA. What caused the excess bleed water and how can it be solved?
Superplasticizer is used to give greater workability to the concrete mix with less water. Less water in the mix means you should get a stronger, more durable end product. If you are seeing excessive bleed water rise to the surface, this means too much water was added to the mix at the plant or at the job.
If the batch ticket has the ingredients listed and the amounts, compare the amount of water in the mix (including water added at the job site) with the laboratory mix design. If this information is not shown on the truck ticket, contact the batch plant for the data on the truck load(s) in question.
Never allow water to be added at the jobsite without first checking to see the slump is acceptable.
