Dolly Varden Siding

What is Dolly Varden siding?
Why do they call it Dolly Varden Siding?

Dolly Varden siding is a special mill cut of siding that has a thick bevel pattern with a 1/2" rabbeted edge. The siding panels are applied horizontally and fit together tightly protecting the joints from water infiltration. Unlike standard beveled siding, Dolly Varden’s back side fits flat against the substrate. This sturdy siding board is still used as an exterior cladding on buildings today.

Dolly Varden was the heroine in Charles Dickens’ novel, Barnaby Rudge (1841), Apparently readers found Dolly to be so irresistible that they named a waltz, a rose, a trout, and even a siding pattern for her.
