Collar Tie Purpose

What purpose does a collar tie serve in roof framing?

Wind blowing across a gabled roof causes an incredible upward pressure similar to the pressure over an airplane wing. Collar ties have traditionally been installed near the peak to hold the framing together in a wind.
Collar ties and rafter ties are often confused. Rafter ties are installed at the bottom of opposing rafters where ceiling joists are installed perpendicular to the rafters or where no ceiling joists are used, such as in a garage or a shed. Rafter ties simply keep the rafters and the top of the wall from spreading apart with the load of the roof.
